Semrush is a saas for all online marketers who build a brand presence on the search engine. This helps these online marketers for the purpose like SEO, Paid marketing, content marketing, and many more task.
Before I tell you some good points, this article is to point out some major drawbacks which every online marketer must know to avoid preferring Semrush for online marketing. If you are planning to subscribe to Semrush specifically for SEO then you must read this article till the end.
Semrush has Poor Crawlers.
Whenever you build backlinks for your website, you want Google to identify that your website is getting popular in your niche. People generally use many tools to get their backlinks crawled by google.
But unfortunately, we all know google is smart but slow in crawling inactive websites and hence if you are getting backlinks from an inactive or infrequently updating websites then there is a high probability that your backlinks won’t appear earlier in google search console.
Generally, when you create backlinks, google index those backlinks and display it under the links section of the google search console. Take a look at the screenshot below.
So , if you have encountered with the speed at which google index your backlinks or your website, you may find that it is fast in indexing a website’s newly published content or page but to generate the backlink data or the external data, it takes like 7 -15 days or sometimes less than that to display the new backlinks that points to your website.
Now, why am I telling this when we want to know the reasons to hate semrush? Go ahead and read the facts.
Semrush bots also crawl millions of websites and it detects your website’s backlink profile and shows it in the domain reports or the backlink audit reports.
There are two ways in which semrush will show your backlink profile.
- Ethier, it will crawl and show the final results or
- If you ask an access to your google search console then it would show the complete backlink profile.
We tested this and found that, with option one that is asking semrush to crawl and identify our backlinks, it failed to even count the number of backlinks lesser than what google search console link report already showed.
Secondly, we also gave semrush our access to the links report in google search console and set the query to import the backlinks from google search console to the backlink audit report on semrush but still it failed to show at least the links account that google search console link report has already shown.
This was the height of failure semrush had in identifying your backlink profile which is a prior observation campaign for an off-page SEO task.
No options to identify 404 ERROR for finding backlink opportunity.
You must have heard about a technique in link building for making backlinks, “the 404 broken link hack”.
When you build backlinks to improve your website SEO, you either create amazing content and promote it so that it gets attention from people or you outreach people with your amazing piece of content and ask webmasters for a link back to that content for a contextual backlink.
Having a 404 error page is not considered as good for On-page SEO hence nobody likes have that, but you never know when any website can get shutdown to whom you may have given a backlink in any of your articles.
You only come to Know this when you perform a site audit for your website. Otherwise, the 404 error sits like a ghost into your blog or website. Here, there is an opportunity to identify this for other blog and let then know about it and in return, you can ask them to link that 404 error keyword to your piece of content.
Let’s consider a case where I gave you 200 website who can potentially give me a backlink for this particular article and ask you to get a contextual backlink. So, these are some of the following ways you can choose.
- You directly contact via email to the webmaster’s inbox to ask for a backlink from any of their website’s blog, pages, etc. This is not a smart way as it has a very low chance of your mail getting attention.
- You do a site audit for each of the 200 websites to find any 404 existence on those websites. Just imagine, doing an audit for 200 websites. It can be hectic. While ubersuggest site audit claims to do it in 3 minutes still if you calculate 200 websites multiplied by 3 minutes then it says that you need 600 minutes approx to do the site audit for them. That means 10 hours. This is also a poor method.
- The smart way. Using ahref, I experienced that you can simply use an HTTP 404 filter which will tell you website having that error. You need to simply upload that website list and rest ahrefs will do the work in a minute. Isn’t that cool way? Now just approach with an outreach email to those webmasters and let them know that they have such error and introduce them with your masterpiece content. You will surely get backlinks from a few of those websites in the 200 lists. In a few hours, you would gain a quality contextual backlink.
SEMrush again fails to help you in such backlink opportunity hunting.
Poor Link Building tool in Semrush.
Semrush has an option for link building which they claim to help SEO expert, get an opportunity to build backlink. How does it function and why we should hate semrush for this? Let us know this in detail.
When you start building backlinks using semrush link building tool, it will ask you which keywords you want to use to build links?
After that, it will ask you to list down your competitors so that it doesn’t suggest you to build a link on competitor websites. It is obvious that your competitors would not like to give you a backlink. It may hamper their ranking in SERP race.
Now I will again give you a scenario. For suppose, I ask you to build backlink for an HR software. So, when you go to check the SERP result to find your competitors whom you want to beat in the SERP then you will find that for HR software, you will find that even till the 100th position, there will be an hr software business website and even beyond that. Semrush allows you to add up to only 10 competitors. Now, when I use semrush for link building to find opportunities, with only 10 competitors listing, it will show me to go and build backlinks to those 90 unlisted competitors.
This is the biggest joke that semrush link building tool displays in its dashboard. This boils and brings me down to the question, with plenty of demerits in semrush, it has a large user base. I admit, there are good reasons to subscribe to this software as well but subscribing to Semrush for SEO will be a blunder until it doesn’t update its functionality for SEO.
Poor new keyword discovery
Once your website has got new pages and blogs and you have submitted your sitemap or allowed google to crawl your website, it is exected that google will start ranking your pages according to certain keywords that it begin displaying it in google search console.
Now comes our super tortoise of the story. Mr. Semrush. I will tell you out of my experience comparing this new keyword discovery of semrush v/s google search console.
People always say that google is slow in indexing, ranking web pages for all potential keywords that any page deserves. Yes, google bot takes time to crawl everything in your website and rank it accordingly. So, it identifies the words that you use on your page and take out keywords and rank that page.
Now, comparing the speed, semrush is slow. If compared, I would say that if google search console shows me 50 new keywords in last 3 days then semrush would discover hardly 5- 7 keywords that a page got ranked for. It is that slow and semrush developers need to improve this at the priority because their customers are paying huge.
So again, semrush fails in discovering new keywords that a website has started ranking for.
These top 4 reasons are actually a prior demand for any SEO guy to scale website on the google search engine. Semrush lacks and falls heavily on making such magics.
