Digital Detox: Why It Is Important For Digital Consultants?

digital detox

To all the digital consultants? What you do in the 1st one hour after you wake up? I asked the same questions to 20 random people, regardless of there job, work etc. Most of their answer had the habit of checking the phone.

The funny part? For common people, it is a process of fun but for a digital consultant, it begins like,

  • Checking analytics.
  • Going through mails.
  • Checking affiliate incomes.
  • Finding social media notification.
  • Checking SEO tools.

In a poll conducted by the organization Common Sense Media, 50% of teens reported that they felt that they were addicted to their mobile devices. A whopping 78% of the teen respondents said that they check their digital devices hourly. Reference

And whatnot. And the day keeps on going like that. For digital consultants, opening Facebook is like going to work. Adding a post on Instagram is like being conscious of the improved engagement on that post. We use digital platforms not for fun but for personal or business growth.

This can be addictive. You get used to checking emails, analytics, growth or falling curve, getting conscious about how to make digital growth better etc. It is a trap of our life which we want to come out of.

What is a digital detox?

Digital detox is a process of avoiding the action of using digital media for a definate day. Letting your brain, eyes and mind go to a relax mode and allowing it to multiple the thought process to new verticals.

Why Digital detox is important?

I will not tell you the scientific reason. Just sharing my personal experience, what I felt after self taking this detox process.

  1. You get time to live your personal life with your own people.
  2. Come out of the fake world and life the real-life because, in digital platforms, most of the content is to promote something in order to sell it.
  3. Break from work is important.
  4. Remove the chance of getting too addicted.

How to Perform Digital Detox?

Sharing 9 tips that I had followed personally in order to work smoothly while serving as a digital consultant to international businesses worldwide.

1. DISCONNECTION WITH PRIOR NOTICE

If you put down the phone completely, could you miss something? The fear of not receiving important messages can make it difficult to disconnect, so inform your family, friends or even the boss that you will not be available after a certain time or during a weekend, for example.

You can indicate it in the status of your social networks and record a message in the mailbox of your smartphone. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about someone suffering from your offline time.

2. PUT A LIMIT ON EMAIL REVIEW

At home you do not go to the mailbox every five minutes, nor do you do it with your mobile. Check the arrival of emails two or three times a day and, if possible, always at the same times.

During the weekend, you don’t have to look at your inbox more than once a day.

3. GO WHERE THE MOBILE CAN’T GO

When you swim in the pool, you will definitely not miss your mobile. Smartphones are also taboo in the movies, such as during a yoga session or at a theater performance.

But it is not necessary that the regulations force you to turn off your mobile or put it in airplane mode. You can decide yourself, for example, to go for a walk and “forget” the phone at home.

4. SELECT THE BULLETINS WELL AND GIVE A FOLDER TO SPAM

It can be really annoying to get newsletters all the time burying really important messages in your inbox. Often we just delete them. But that’s exactly what can lead to a flood of mail over time that you don’t want to read at all. So from time to time, take the time to solve this problem.

Unsubscribe from newsletters that don’t interest you and move spam emails to the appropriate folder. If another spam is from the same sender, your program will recognize it later and will not even allow the mail to reach your inbox.

This cleaning takes a bit of effort. But then you have more peace and quiet and a much “cleaner” inbox. Your computer and mobile phone will stop receiving new messages every few minutes.

5. RUNS JUST AS WELL WITHOUT AN APP

While you run or cycle, your mobile phone can play your favorite music, keep you informed about the consumption of calories, the pulse and the kilometers you have covered …

All of that is unnecessary. Remember that there is nothing better than being present here and now, also when you exercise. Concentrate on your body and what is around you.

6. BECOME A DIGITAL DETOX STEP-BY-STEP

If you find it difficult to do without your phone all of a sudden, do it gradually. For example, start by turning off your mobile for an hour. When you turn off your mobile phone, you also save electricity and battery.

Slowly increase the time without a phone until you can live without it for a whole day. You’ll see, it’s worth it.

7. USE “AIRPLANE MODE” MORE OFTEN

For digital detox, you don’t always have to do without the mobile phone entirely. After all, you can wear it as a watch.

If you want a little more peace and quiet without turning off your smartphone, just put it in airplane mode. All data transfer will stop.

You will no longer receive emails, chat messages, calls or SMS. That means there is no contact with the outside world through the mobile phone. However, you can still perform all internal functions that do not require the Internet.

8. THERE ARE APPLICATIONS FOR DIGITAL DETOXIFICATION

It sounds strange, but they really do exist. There are applications that teach you how to use computers and mobiles in moderation . These apps block applications or calls.

One of the best is Offtime. It allows you to control the time you look at your mobile and restricts the appearance of notifications, among other functions. The Blackout app is much more radical: you set a schedule when the phone will not be operational and it will be, with no possible reversal.

9. POWER USERS GO ON A DIGITAL DETOX VACATION

Is a whole week offline a dream for you? This can come true in several places. There are monasteries where you can relax in peace without mobile phones ringing everywhere. Also in many mountain huts, nature is experienced instead of emitting beeps and vibrations. Also some hotels and rural houses have free Wi-Fi zones.

Final Thought

Live the life with yourself not with your mobile phones and technology. What more can I suggest you? Few years down the line, you will die and nothing will go along with you. So, understand the process of prioritizing and life your life to fullest.
